Smart host is a kind of email delivery agent which allows an SMTP Server (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol Server) to transfer emails messages to a midway server instead of sending the message directly to the recipient’s inbound SMTP server. Smart hosts are also known as SMTP smart hosts or Message Transfer Agents (MTA)
Smart hosts can be used for anti spam purposes i.e. businesses can reroute their emails using a smart host to bypass spam filters of their customer’s email clients. This is a commonly used method that many businesses use to increase their email delivery rates.
Difference between SMTP Smart Hosts and Open Mail Relays
Smart Hosts require prior authentication from the sender of the emails to make sure that the email sender has the permissions to forward the emails through the smarthost. This is what makes a smart host different from an open mail relay which is an SMTP server which is configured in such a way that it permits anyone on the Internet to send emails through it. Open mail relays forward messages without any prior authentication from the senders whereas Smart Hosts use authentication techniques such as SMTP Authentication and POP (Post Office Protocol) Authentication before sending emails through it.
